Before...

Once upon a time, years ago, before the age of Instagram travel bloggers (#moab) and the sensation of travel across the Utah south; Moab was a place of quiet and beauty. Now things are much different. Due to Utah's Big 5 Program, the visitation of Utah's national parks have increased greatly. Moab is one of those places that has changed. It is still beautiful, just a lot less quiet.

As a child, my family loved going to Arches National Park. And often on spring or fall breaks, we would take trips to Moab to enjoy the beauty of the park, with relatively few people. It was easy to find places to stay, and even better- there was no line to get into the park.

Fall in Arches...

For many a fall break, my family, my aunt and cousins, and even my grandparents would venture down to southern Utah to enjoy nice weather and the beautiful park. Our favorite place to stay is called the Moab Valley RV Resort and Campground .

This place was like a home away from home. From enjoyable campsites, to large RV spaces, to cozy cabinets, this place had it all.

As children, my cousins and I spent much time swimming in the pool, playing giant chess, and smashing the tetherball around the pole. As a child, this place was the most fun place in the world, right behind Disneyland.

We would take the short drive into the park and spend the day hiking and picnicking. After those long days, with tired bodies we would return to the resort and roast hotdogs and smores, or wrap up in blankets to stare at the stars.

Spring in Arches...

Our spring days in Arches and Moab were ones to remember. I recall one year where our spring break trip overlapped with Easter. That crisp Easter morning our mom hid pastel Easter eggs all over the cabin and surrounding areas as us kids raced around with grocery bags to find the candy-filled eggs. After all the eggs were accounted for we spent the morning eating candy for breakfast before we headed to  Arches where we conquered the Delicate Arch hike.

As kids that hike felt climbing Mount Everest. We stopped often for snack breaks of water and chocolate licorice, and the hike took us much longer than was needed but looking back it was fun. I'm glad my parents encouraged us to go on that hike, even if it was hard for us kids. We saw something beautiful and worked hard for it. I wouldn't have recognized it then, but looking back now, that hard work taught us the hard work can bring great rewards.

Now...

It's been many years since I've returned to Moab. With the sudden surge of social media and the phenomenon of the perfect pic, Arches National Park has been nothing but packed all year round. I yearn for those times at that resort, laughing with family and sleeping on sleeping bags under the stars. The area has grown tremendously over the years and they are some very excellent places to stay in Moab, both old and new, cheap or expensive. Because my time in Moab and Arches National Park was so formative for me, I want to share some highly recommended places to stay so that others will be able to enjoy this wonderful place like I did.
